Products & sourcing
What are the main differences between roasted and dry roasted nuts?
- Roasted Nuts: Cooked in oil, which enhances flavor and texture.
- Dry Roasted Nuts: Cooked without oil, resulting in a more natural taste and typically a crunchier texture.
Are raw nuts healthier than roasted nuts?
Both raw and roasted nuts are healthy and provide valuable nutrients. Nuts contain beneficial fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
What are cooking grade nuts and how do they differ from normal nuts?
Cooking grade nuts are typically less expensive than regular nuts, usually 10–20% cheaper. They differ from normal (or premium) nuts in several ways:
Why are Australian products more expensive than products from other countries?
Australia is a high-cost country with a labor-intensive agricultural industry. Higher labor and production costs result in higher prices for local products compared to those from countries with lower costs.
Why does JoyNuts source nuts from so many different countries?
JoyNuts sources nuts from over 60 countries to cater to the diverse needs of our global customer base. Australia’s vibrant multicultural society includes people from various backgrounds, and sourcing exotic and hard-to-find produce from around the world allows us to meet the varied preferences of our customers.
Dried fruit & preservatives
What is sulphur dioxide and why is it used?
Sulphur dioxide, also known as preservative 220, is a commonly used preservative in the food industry. It helps preserve the color and freshness of dried fruits and other food products. Its primary role is to prevent spoilage and maintain the quality of the food.
Why do dried fruits sometimes darken over time?
Dried fruits, like fresh fruits, undergo a natural aging process that can cause them to darken. This darkening is influenced by several factors, including temperature, humidity, and storage conditions. As dried fruit ages, its color may change due to chemical reactions and exposure to environmental elements.
Health & dietary
How do the fats in nuts impact cholesterol levels?
The healthy fats in nuts help to improve your cholesterol profile by reducing levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. Incorporating nuts into your diet can contribute to better overall heart health and lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
What does "Certified Organic" mean?
Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. They are also free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic farming practices focus on enhancing the ecological balance of natural systems, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting biodiversity.
How do organic and natural products differ?
The key difference is that organic products are specifically grown without synthetic chemicals and follow regulated farming practices, while natural products are distinguished by the absence of artificial additives and minimal processing. Organic products can also be natural, but natural products are not necessarily organic if they do not adhere to organic farming standards.
Does JoyNuts have any gluten-free products?
Yes, JoyNuts offers a range of products that are gluten-free. However, we do not test each product line specifically for gluten, so we do not make a gluten-free claim on the label as a precautionary measure.
How can I identify if a product is certified kosher?
All our kosher products feature a ‘K’ symbol (an authorized kosher symbol) on the label. In addition, the ‘K’ is included in the product description on our online shop.
Storage & freshness
How does the season affect the freshness of nuts and dried fruits?
Nuts and fruits are harvested once a year, and they are generally fresher at the start of the season. As the season progresses, the produce may lose some flavor and color. Therefore, early-season products tend to have optimal freshness and quality.
What are the best ways to store nuts and seeds to keep them fresh?
To maintain the freshness, crispness, and flavor of your nuts and seeds, store them in an airtight container. For optimal preservation, keep them in the refrigerator or freezer.
What is the shelf life of your products?
At JoyNuts, we ensure the freshness of our products due to our high turnover and daily stock replenishment. Here are the approximate shelf life guidelines for our products, in accordance with FSANZ (Food Standards Australia and New Zealand):
- Nuts: 6–10 months
- Nut Butter: 12 months
- Dried Fruit: 10–12 months
- Legumes and Grains: 12 months
- Health Foods: 12 months
- Confectionery: 10–12 months
- Snack Foods: 10–12 months
- Spices: 12 months
Storage Tips
Store all nuts and seeds in the refrigerator or freezer to keep their natural oils neutral and prevent them from going rancid, particularly in warm weather. Contrary to popular belief, nuts do not actually freeze solid, so they remain usable even when kept in the freezer.
